6 interesting augmented reality facts you need to read now

Augmented reality fact no text

Augmented reality is the overlaying of digital information (such as videos, graphics and images) onto the real world.   It is a way to seamlessly integrate the digital and non-digital in a way that is engaging and exciting.  Since starting at Ads Reality, I see opportunities to use AR pretty much daily – just the other night I thought how good it would be to have AR on my son’s dinosaur book.  I really have no idea how to pronounce the dinosaur names, a quick scan of the dinosaur to tell me how to say its name would be really helpful!

We are hearing more and more about AR.  We are seeing more examples of AR every day (Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that over 1,000 AR based Apps have been created so far) and the vast majority of people have come across AR, even if they don’t really know what it is.  They have certainly heard of Pokemon Go.

So, what else do we know about augmented reality, other than Pokemon Go?  Here are 6 of my favourite facts about AR

Augmented reality fact one: AR has been around for a while

Contrary to belief AR has actually been around for some time, with the first iteration being recorded nearly 50 years ago.  Back in 1968 an American computer Scientist at Harvard University, Ivan Sutherland, created the first head-mounted display system.  This creation was the start of the augmented reality technology we know and love today.

Augmented reality fact two: There are a LOT of AR startups & it keeps growing

According to AngelList as of November 2017 there are 1,261 augmented reality start-ups.  In January 2017 there were 737.   This increase of just over 71% in a matter of 9 months highlights the rate in which the augmented reality industry is growing!

Augmented reality fact three: NASA was an early adopter of AR

Back in 1999, NASA used a AR dashboard to navigate its X-38.  Astronaut, Scott Kelly, used this AR-enabled dashboard to report back to Mission Control his view from space.

Augmented reality fact four: The AR game ‘Pokemon Go’ increased Nintendo’s stock prices by 23%

Despite being a free App, the success of Niantic’s popular AR game, Pokemon Go, increased Nintendo’s stock prices by 23% after its launch, had 15 million downloads in its first week and generated $200 million in revenue in the first month.  Check out The Fact Site for more interesting facts about Pokemon Go.

Augmented reality fact five: You have probably come across or used AR without even realising it

Think you have never used or experienced augmented reality? Chances are you have without even knowing it, sometimes it is there but the term ‘augmented reality’ just isn’t used to identify it.  For example, in 1998 the NFL started using AR to cast the yellow first down line during a live game and if you have ever watched who framed Roger Rabbit you have had a taste of what AR is about.

Augmented reality fact six: The term ‘augmented reality’ was coined in 1990

Researcher, Tom Caudell, coined the term augmented reality back in 1990. He used it to describe the merging of virtual graphics onto a physical display.
